Not even a week after startup WiPower boasted about its breakthrough in wireless power, Murata and Seiko Epson have announced plans to “jointly development a non-contact quick charging system.” Reportedly, the technology “leverages electromagnetic induction,” and both the charging stand and a given mobile device would be “respectively equipped with coils that generate power.” As for the production, it sounds like Seiko Epson will hone in on the “transmitting side, or primary side,” while Murata “will be involved in the production of the rechargeable Li-ion.” The overriding goal is to recharge a handset “in about 10 to 15 minutes in a non-contact manner,” which would purportedly push power transmission efficiency from current levels of 30- to 50-percent to nearly 70-percent. Oh, and we’ve already been assured that these “will not generate heat.”

Just a week after the DVD CCA approved an unexciting (and incredibly restrictive) download-to-burn scheme, DataPlay has unveiled what it calls the “world’s first CSS-managed recording DVD burner.” Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about this type of setup, and as it turns out, DataPlay is actually “participating in the Qflix technology and IP licensing program.” The aptly-named MovieWriter is an external USB 2.0 device that is “capable of writing CSS encrypted content for playback on standard DVD players,” but alas, you’ll be forced to pick up the presumably expensive CSS-MR pre-keyed recordable discs through Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden before any burning can take place. Currently, no pricetag is being listed, but we are told that the outfit is already planning an internal version for OEMs to integrate into pre-fabricated machines. [Warning: PDF read link]

In the latest scheme to make it just a little easier for you to part with your money, Visa has begun rolling out its Micro Tag key fobs for contactless (and if under $25, signature-less) payments. The issuer-customizable Tags are based on Visa’s payWave technology — an RFID system similar to MasterCard’s PayPass — and are meant to act as companions to existing credit and debit cards. To commemorate the launch, Visa passed out 1,000 Tags pre-loaded with $15 at yesterday’s San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park, encouraging fans to purchase the fatty stadium concessions that could perhaps lull them into the false notion that this is a completely secure payment method.

Hitachi has developed a prototype display with an amazing 8 million to one contrast ratio, achieved by combining a traditional LCD display with an LCD projector and multiplying their respective contrast ratios. Designed for dark rooms, the prototype is said to be targeted at a 30cm depth using a short focal-length projector model. The LCD panel sports 1080p resolution, while the rear projector is a standard 720p type. Hitachi also claims that 3D technology could be combined with the same method. Both will be on display at CEATEC Japan in early October. No word on any plans for a plasma / Etch-a-Sketch hybrid display.

We’ve seen some pretty wild ideas for space tethers, but it seems like actually executing is a little trickier than people expect — a joint Russian Space Agency / ESA Young Engineers Satellite 2 mission just screeched to a halt as the deployment of an 18-mile space tether went awry. The project, which was to involve the longest object ever deployed in space, was part of a challenge issued to European university students to safely return an object from space, but failed when the the capsule accidentally released after just 5 miles of tether had unwound. The team thinks the idea still has merit, saying that “they are extremely satisfied and would like to do more mission testing.” Here’s hoping the next time goes a little smoother.

EchoStar sure seems to be keeping itself busy these days, with its long-running talks with AT&T now said to be “heating up” just days after it acquired Sling Media for a cool $380 million. According to TheStreet.com, EchoStar is apparently considering splitting the company into two publicly traded units, one that would focus on its consumer TV service (which is where Sling fits in) and one that would focus on its wholesale satellite transmission service. As you can probably guess, it’s the former that AT&T is interested in, and it’s apparently prepared to pay $55 a share for the potentially separate company. According to TheStreet, however, EchoStar is currently holding out for a hefty $65 a share, although at least one analyst “sensing a deal in the works” is speculating that AT&T will “likely pay about $56 a share for the TV service.” As TheStreet points out, the acquisition would likely help out AT&T with it’s so-called Project Lightspeed, which aims to combine TV, phone, and internet service on a single fiber optic network.

So after all the uproar and lawsuits over Best Buy’s secret in-store intranet, which looked exactly like the external bestbuy.com site but lacked sale prices and other discounts, the company has responded in the lamest way possible: by putting a warning label on the in-store kiosks. The warning will say something like “THIS KIOSK DISPLAYS IN-STORE PRICES - WHICH MAY DIFFER FROM NATIONAL INTERNET PRICES,” and advise customers to see a sales associate if they have any questions. It’s still unclear why the company won’t just do the right thing and match its own listed prices, but we’re willing to bet the suits are patting themselves on the back for their innovative, out-of-the-box solution. Martinis for all!
