Technically, Niveus was the first of the major partners to spill the proverbial beans on its Extender for Windows Media Center, and while it was sitting around for all to see at CEDIA, details were admittedly slim. Now, however, the firm has come clean and doled out the specs for its Media Center Extender - EDGE, following the moves made by Linksys and D-Link earlier. The EDGE boasts a “Glacier Passive Cooling for near silent operation,” RS-232 / IP / IR for third-party control support, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet jack, HDMI / component outputs and two-channel analog / digital optical audio outs. Unfortunately, Niveus’ box doesn’t include integrated WiFi, so its wired or nothin’ here, and while we’d love to know how much this thing will actually cost, we do know it’ll land sometime in November. About a year after the Dutch government began seriously worrying about the integrity of e-voting machines, they’ve literally pulled the plug on the venture. The biggest flaw was the lack of a paper trail according to a special committee which reported its finding this morning. As such, Nederlanders will return to the “red pencil method” in upcoming elections until an automated paper-counting solution can be deployed… and then hacked.

Update: To be perfectly clear, the regulation allowing e-voting machines has been withdrawn — i.e., effective immediately, there is no more e-voting in the Netherlands. However, the Dutch government will make an overarching decision in the next two months “to regain the trust of the public in our voting system.” Given that the government commissioned this study themselves, the decision is expected to be a simple rubber stamp approval.

So after all the uproar and lawsuits over Best Buy’s secret in-store intranet, which looked exactly like the external bestbuy.com site but lacked sale prices and other discounts, the company has responded in the lamest way possible: by putting a warning label on the in-store kiosks. The warning will say something like “THIS KIOSK DISPLAYS IN-STORE PRICES - WHICH MAY DIFFER FROM NATIONAL INTERNET PRICES,” and advise customers to see a sales associate if they have any questions. It’s still unclear why the company won’t just do the right thing and match its own listed prices, but we’re willing to bet the suits are patting themselves on the back for their innovative, out-of-the-box solution. It’s been nearly a year to the day since Toshiba unleashed a slew of VARDIA updates — the RD-A600 notwithstanding — but recently the firm got official with four new combo recorders. Starting things off is the October-bound RD-W301 (¥90,000; $785), which is the only newcomer to record to HDD, DVD and VHS, and it also includes a 300GB drive, HDMI / S-Video / composite outputs and a hybrid TV tuner. The RD-E301 (¥80,000; $698), which is also slated to ship next month, shuns the VHS crowd but maintains the other features already mentioned. As for the RD-S301 (¥90,000; $785), it keeps the 300GB hard drive but doubles the amount of built-in hybrid tuners and tosses in an Ethernet jack for good measure. The flagship RD-S601 ups the ante even more with a DV input, i.LINK connectivity and a 600GB HDD, and should be available for ¥120,000 ($1,047) when it lands alongside the S301 in November.

Gateway and Linksys aren’t the only firms using Digital Life to showcase new wares, as Hasbro is making the most of its opportunity by inviting fun-lovin’ tweens over to its booth to play with a number of new holiday must-haves. Aside from the familiar Power Tour guitar and NET JET game, the company is also showing off its Littlest Pet Shop VIPs (virtual interactive pets), which will launch next month for $14.99 apiece, and a few new critters in the Furreal Friends family, one of which is pictured above. Additionally, Tiger Electronics is introducing its October-bound I-Dog Amp’d ($34.99), which will “tap its paw to the tune, bob its head to the beat, swish its ears and wag its tail to the rhythm of your favorite songs.” Lastly, the I-List Music Party game sounds like the perfect way to entertain guests at your next sleepover, and should be available soon to test your knowledge of music for $19.99. So now that the EchoStar acquisition is public, Sling Media’s CEO, Blake Krikorian sat down with SlingCommunity’s Matt Whitlock and talked about how the deal is going to affect the place-shifting upstart. In his usual candid way, Krikorian said Sling is going to stay independent, and while the company is obviously going to try and leverage Dish Network’s huge install base and software library, it’s not going to rule out deals with other content and delivery providers — in fact, Sling will continue to work with EchoStar’s arch-rival DirecTV on things like NFL Supercast. Sadly, there are no juicy product details, but Krikorian did say that “there’s some interesting things we’re going to be able to cook up.” Overall, Krikorian seems incredibly stoked about the acquisition — which probably means good things for all you place-shifting hooligans out there.

The Laguna Niguel Kohl’s location certainly isn’t the first notable venue in California to benefit from a large solar panel installation, but this particular setup is being dubbed the “largest planned US photovoltaic solar rollout to date.” Reportedly, Kohl’s Department Stores is planning on equipping 63 of its 80 California locations with solar electric systems, which should total “approximately 25 megawatts,” and upon completion, the program would “represent approximately 15-percent of California’s photovoltaic installations to date.” Granted, the US Tesco building’s solar roof may still hold the crown (at least for now) for “world’s largest,” but Kohl’s is hoping to impress by “generating more than 35-million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually” when its massive rollout is complete.

Prepare to feel your carrier-hate well from within. Remember Verizon Wireless’ lawsuit against the FCC claiming that the 700MHz open-access auction rule — the rule enabling the likes of Google, Apple, and others to take home a slice of the spectrum pie — “violates the US Constitution?” Well, according to “industry sources,” FCC chairman Kevin Martin is “aggressively pushing” for revisions to the 700MHz open-access rule in response to Verizon Wireless’ lobbying efforts. However, having been met with an internal FCC “backlash” last week, Martin is said to be preparing a “declaratory ruling” in an effort to fast-track support for VZW’s claim outside of the normal public-comment process. Insiders worry that Martin is caving to VZW pressure as the auction, expected to generate some $15 billion in FCC fun-money, draws near. Man, nothing says free market capitalism like a little protectionist bullying — “can we sue you now.”
