While some past pronouncements of world-changing inventions haven’t exactly panned out as promised, this latest one will at least have a pretty large stage on which to prove itself, with none other than Al Gore and others paying £1,000 or more apiece in the audience. As you might expect, however, things are being kept as vague as possible ahead of the big unveiling, which is set to go down later today in London. One of the few apparently clued in in the matter, British Inventors’ Society founder Kane Kramer, would only go so far as to describe it as “a new science, a Super Material,” adding that, “It would be 80 per cent cheaper than any alternative means of production, and it will contribute in a major way to reducing climate change.” So, it’s “something,” but we’ll just have to wait and see if it delivers as advertised.

According to a recent report, the French head of stun-gun maker Taser has plans to create a “mini-flying saucer like drone which could also fire Taser stun rounds on criminal suspects or rioting crowds.” Antoine di Zazzo, fervent proselytizer of the electroshock weapon, is cutting through the is / isn’t torture noise of recent UN reports with the news that the non-lethal device is about to make a serious splash in France, with president Nicolas Sarkozy promising to hand one to every policeman and gendarme. Of course, once di Zazzo’s army of tiny, hovering stun machines take to the air — sometime next year — the police probably won’t have to worry about brandishing their weapons.

Samsung just can’t catch a break these days. The sprawling company’s securities division, Samsung Securities, got a surprise visit by some Seoul prosecutors Friday morning, who were after financial documents and hard drives. Samsung’s cooperating fully, and continues to claim the allegations — which include word of a $216 million slush fund for bribing government officials — are completely false. We’re glad to see that this latest spot of the trouble with the law doesn’t directly involve Samsung Electronics, and investors seem to be betting that the end result won’t have much of an impact on Samsung’s actual solvency as a company, but it’s not like this is exactly helping the Korean giant’s brand.

iriver just took the wraps off their D27 QWERTY dictionary and W7 personal media player they teased us with last week. The D27 if a full-size, electronic dictionary with plenty of audio and video support. It features a 480 x 272 display, FM tuner, 2GB of flash, and up to 27 hours of battery life depending upon usage habits. More interesting for westerners however, is the W7 touchscreen (finger or built-in stylus) media player which shares the industrial design of the W10 — in fact, it may well be the very same WiFi device with Skyhook positioning only now sporting a W7 moniker for domestic S.Korea release. Video of the W7 in action after the break, plenty of pics and more video just beyond the Via link.

TUAW reader Ian Donaldson discovered that the SBEnableAppReveal preference allowed you to double-tap hidden applications to reveal them–and double-tap them again to re-hide them. I decided to see if I could extend this behavior to other applications. After a bit of testing, I discovered the SBIsRevealable preference in the three keynote applications: YouTube, Safari and iTunes. So after modifying plutil to allow it to set Boolean values as well as strings, I went ahead and issued the following command:

iphone # plutil -1 SBIsRevealable /Applications/*.app/Info.plist

After restarting, I was pleased to find that pretty much all my applications were hidden and could now use the double-tap-to-reveal trick. The three holdouts? Photos, Camera, and iPod, all three of which use special “roles” in their Info.plist files. These roles let the Slideshow app appear as both “Photos” and “Cameras” on the iPhone, and MobileMusicPlayer as “Music” and “Video” on the iPod touch and “iPod” on the iPhone.

TUAW reader Mauro writes that after running the 1.1.2 jailbreak, YouTube no longer works. He asks: “Any idea how to solve this problem?” Here is a simple guide from Ging of the South that will help.

The guide walks you through editing a particular property list to add a device certificate that authorizes your iPhone or iPod touch. The Ging page provides the certificate text for you to paste into Property List Editor. If you’re not on a Mac, you can use my plutil utility to convert the file to XML format and then edit it with your favorite text editor.

Thanks Drudge

Marian, one of our favorite iPod touch hackers, has added a mic preamp to his iPod touch dock connector. Hack-a-day writes that he built the entire circuit to fit within a standard iPod dock connector. In addition, Marian sent along a picture of his rig while under development (check it out after the jump). It looks like the iPod touch-as-recording device is well under way towards getting this technology developed for general consumption!

CAD fans, prepare to get stoked. Objet Geometries — a “world leader” in photopolymer jetting — has announced that it will debut a system capable of producing 3D parts and assemblies made from different materials in a single build. The device, known as the Connex500, utilizes the company’s “PolyJet Matrix,” which can create 21 composite materials and seven separate model materials. “The Connex500 opens a new chapter for the 3-D printing and rapid prototyping industry,” said Adina Shorr, CEO of Objet. The machine is capable of producing both rigid and flexible material, and can create polypropylene-like surfaces. Honestly, the process the Connex500 uses is pretty complicated stuff, but you really only need to understand one basic fact: you will never again be missing a piece from your chess set. Hit the read link and get all the technical details on your next pricey purchase.

Looks like the Taser parties are back on — Taser issued a terse rebuttal to the UN today, finding fault with its conclusion that being hit with a taser is equivalent to torture. Saying that the committee is “out of touch with the reality that confronts law enforcement officers every day worldwide,” Taser also noted that the criteria used to define torture, “extreme pain,” also rules out other common police implements like pepper spray and batons. Like some other reports we’ve seen, Taser says that since their products don’t actually electrocute people, the main danger involved in being struck with a taser is an “unassisted fall,” which seems to us like pretty much the only kind of fall there is — but we’re not getting in the middle of this one. Looks like this is going to be a long fight — everybody got their popcorn?

We’re pretty certain we were supposed to be seeing cellphones, DAPs, and medical devices — you know, gadgets — rock the PowerCast wireless power system by now, but it looks like the first product off the line to include the tech is this chintzy $395 Christmas tree from Frontgate. The fake tree does indeed feature wireless power for its LED lights, but honestly, if you’re moving your tree so much you need it to be wireless, you should really think about getting out of your house more often.

[Thanks, Joe]
