Wacom goes clubbing, unveils nextbeat NXT-1000 for

We’ve been patiently waiting for Wacom to officially announce its upcoming Intuos4 tablet (recently caught by Mr. Blurrycam), so were were totally caught off-guard when the company instead unveiled a sort of foray into the music biz, a digital DJ interface destined for release in time to hit Japanese and European clubs this summer. It’s called the nextbeat NXT-1000, a device with a plethora of knobs, buttons, and a small LCD for controlling samples, plus a touch-sensitive pad that seems to act as a turntable and a fingertip drum machine in one. That pad actually pops out, maintaining a wireless connection to the base and enabling fleet-footed DJs to show some moves off-stage while still dropping beats — assuming their cans are wireless too. No word on cost at this point, but can you really put a price on that sort of musical freedom?

A buffalo USB speaker? Really? Someone thought this was a good idea? How’s about a totally unlicensed Mickey Multifunction Webcam? You know, for doing lots of random crap, just not very well. Or what about an MP3 pen that helps you learn Mandarin? Yeah, ’cause that’s totally beneficial in more than three locations on Planet Earth. Or, if you’re still not sold, how’s about a USB bamboo fountain that’ll be a surefire catalyst for adding mold and mildew to any room? Believe it or not, all of these are real products that you can exchange hard-earned dollars for, though obviously we wouldn’t suggest it. Cast your vote below for the most jaw-dropping of all.

The Agence France-Presse is reporting that Serge Foucher, president of Sony France, is being held “hostage” by angry workers whose plant is about to close. “He won’t listen to us, we didn’t find any other solution,” said the union spokesman. Foucher had come to the video tape manufacturing plant at Pontonx-sur-l’Adour in southwest France to meet with the 311 workers one more time before the plant’s closure. Unhappy with the compensation offered, the workers barricaded the entry with tree trunks late Thursday night. Look, times are tough, but let’s be civil, ok? Besides, demand for video tapes is certainly not at risk.

If your low-rate router fails on you, you might as well choose a replacement with more utility than the one you’re burying, right? Axel sure thinks so:

“My bargain-basement CompUSA-branded wireless router is finally starting to fail on me, prompting me to buy a new one. I want to get my big color laser printer (a Konica Magicolor 2400w) off my desk and tucked away next to the router, so I want it to have wireless USB print hub functionality. Gigiabit Ethernet and Draft-N are also necessary here, as I’m eventually going to be adding media clients around the house to stream to every TV. Thanks a lot!”

So, there you have it — which wireless router will provide solid, relaiable USB printing while handling the heavy loads of high-def streaming? Think carefully, you wouldn’t want to ruin this guy’s life. Oh, and if you’ve a question of your own you’d like to see here, send it over to ask at engadget dawt com.

Okay, so maybe the headline is a tad on the sensational side, but seriously, this has sensational written all over it. A team of brilliant MIT engineers have conjured up a beltway of sorts that allows for “rapid transit of electrical energy through a well-known battery material,” something that could usher in smaller and lighter cells that could recharge in moments versus hours. There’s even speak that this technology could be adapted for use in cars, and honestly, it doesn’t take an electrical engineer to comprehend how rapid charge / discharge batteries could “induce lifestyle changes.” Hey, laptop battery makers — could you guys look into getting these ready to go in machines by CES 2010? That’d be swell, thanks.

Much like Sony’s Rolly, we’re still struggling to piece together exactly how iriver’s WAVE-HOME device is supposed to revolutionize our lives. And, you know, figure out what exactly it does. Thanks to a unit floating out in South Korea (in black attire, no less), we’re given a decent look of the internet phone / do-it-all home appliance getting unboxed and setup for the first time. Aside from phoning people, we’re told that the handset can also double as a TV remote or controller for a radio / music player. We’re still eager to get our own palms around one of these curious creations, but for now, you can tap the read link to get a few JPEGs closer.
