At last Apple has begun distributing invitations to a press event scheduled for September 9th. The image on the invitation, which features a classic silhouette dancer, pretty much confirms our suspicion that this particular dog-and-pony show feature the iPod (now with cameras! …maybe). Apple typically introduces new iPods in September.
This year’s event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on September 9th at 10:00 a.m Pacific time. Perhaps then we’ll see that secret television ad. In any case, we think it’s safe for the pro-tablet theorists sit this one out. Maybe next time, folks.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Patel Institute of Engineering and Technology’s A.K. Mittra and associates have devised a clever and inexpensive early warning detection system for monitoring the fetal heart rate of that bun months-long in the oven. With two microphones — one put on the pregnant soon-to-be mother’s abdomen and one inside the bedroom — hooked up to a nearby personal, the two audio feeds are used to estimate and subtract the ambient room noise for a better read on the baby’s vitals just before the woman goes to bed. Converted to a wav file, if anomalies are detected it’s immediately compressed to MP3 and sent to the doctor for further testing. An efficient plan, to be sure, and we can only hope the baby is healthy and hyper-intelligent enough to give normal heartbeats and begin recording his or her first LP.

In cities like New York, where bikers ride right alongside heavy traffic, bike helmets are a must. Trouble is, apparently plenty of riders don’t like wearing them because of vanity — most bike helmets aren’t exactly attractive, if you haven’t noticed. Well, the City of New York’s commissioned Projectfuse helmets — that combine safety with an attempt at decent stylings. The helmets feature a two-fold design, with an inner protective polystyrene, which is then covered with a customizable soft fabric that attaches with straps. No, you cannot buy them yet, and we don’t know anything about pricing or availability yet, but we do know that you can score one for free — yes, free — at various events around the city. Let us know if you snag one!

Ariel Waldman contributes Movie Gadget Friday, where she highlights the lovable and lame gadgets from the world of cinema.
We last left off on the cyberpunk streets of LA in Strange Days. This week, in honor of the loss of the man behind so many 1980’s icons, Movie Gadget Friday is paying homage to filmmaker John Hughes with a look into the 1985 cult-classic Weird Science. Tapping into the geek-fiction fantasies of most tinkering teenagers, real-life gadget specs are stretched to surreal capabilities to create the ultimate female bombshell. It’s without surprise that the character’s name, Lisa, was inspired by the Apple Lisa, Apple’s first GUI computer.

Know what we really love? Tea kettles. The thing is, plenty of them look like there was roughly zero thought put into their design — and we’ve all gotten into the habit of accepting those 3 or 4 basic designs offered to us. No more. Bugatti’s got a wholly new approach to boiling water on the horizon, in the form of the Vera. It’s beautifully designed, it’s got a nice array of electronic timing functions — but the bells and whistles are just icing on this beautiful, delicious cake. The Vera kettle will be available this September, for around $300.

Hitachi has always been hot for vein authentication modules, and its latest iteration takes the whole tech down to just three millimeters in thickness. Given that the current generation requires 23.5mm (nearly an inch) of space to operate in, it’s simple to see why your netbook doesn’t have one, but Hitachi hopes that’s all about to change. Using a CMOS sensor to take nearly instant readings, the vein scanner is deadly accurate — the chances of it authorizing the wrong person are a million to one. Volume production is expected within two years, meaning that by 2011 you’ll finally have a reliable way to keep your parents out of your “Misc” data folders.
